| Membership - February |
While reviewing my past articles, I ran across the thoughts in the 2005 Nov - Dec issue of "The El Bekalan", in which then Ill. Suehs spoke of the importance of "retention and restoration" when thinking of membership issues. I would like to add to that what must be the most important of the "R" words of membership...relevance. Relevance is the extent to which the activity is consistent with the priorities and policies of the target Group (sic. new members). The importance of relevance lies in the differential feature of a subset of information that makes it of interest to the receiver. Relevance is a key concept, because it depends on the subject receiving the information. What is relevant for one person can be useless for another and hence can be disinformation or even 'rubbish'. We as Masons must be concerned about the relevance to our prospective members in everything we do. Most of our prospects weren't born prior to the Viet Nam war, nor remember those dark days before color television, much less carbon paper and typewriters. This new blood, I propose to you my brothers, are those young men to whom we should be directing our efforts, our activities, our meetings, and yes, our entertainment. If we fail to offer them a site to seek out social capital (sic. relevance) for themselves as well as their families, our organizations have no future. Fear not this change that must happen. We shall become teachers and advisors to the new members, as all have done who have come before us. But also, forget not, if we do not accept and embrace that change, the Fraternity we love so much is doomed. We can together make this Valley, "the friendliest Valley in California", and in turn bring Relevance to our activities. Gary Peterson, 32°, K.·.C.·.C.·.H.·. |
